OverDrive has announced a NOOK App for wireless downloading of digital material.

"Borrowing eBooks and audiobooks from the library just got a whole lot easier for users of the NOOK HD, NOOK HD+, NOOK Tablet™ and NOOK Color™. Last week, Barnes & Noble added the OverDrive Media Console app to the NOOK Apps™ storefront. This NOOK app enables users to wirelessly borrow eBooks and MP3 audiobooks from the library.

All NOOK devices, including NOOK 1st Edition, NOOK Simple Touch and NOOK Simple Touch with GlowLight, have always enabled users to read eBooks borrowed from libraries and scho  ols, but the process required sideloading the files from a computer using Adobe Digital Editions and a USB cable. Now users of NOOK HD, NOOK HD+, NOOK Tablet and NOOK Color can borrow eBooks and audiobooks wirelessly using the OverDrive app.

Users can visit the NOOK Apps storefront to install the free OverDrive Media Console (OMC) app. The app enables users to locate a library or school nearby, browse or search their eBook and MP3 audiobook collection and, after entering a valid library card or school ID,  check out and download the title for a lending period of one to three weeks (depending on the library or school's policies). At the end of the lending period, the title simply expires.

 The version of OMC available in the NOOK Apps storefront is OMC for Android v2.5, so any instructions found on library Help pages related to OMC for Android will apply to the NOOK app. While the app is free, users will need a valid NOOK account in order to download the app."

Deleting Multiple Tabs on a Kindle Fire

Hi Everyone,
A question asked today involved deleting multiple tabs on a Kindle Fire.  Many times we open multiple tabs as we are browsing the Internet.  You can close them one at a time by tapping on the X found on the tab.  But if you open more than a few you may want to close them all at once.

To close all tabs at once:
1. If not already opened, open the web browser on your Kindle Fire.
2. If not already opened, tap on the window that has the multiple tabs.
3. On the far left-hand side of the Tab bar, tap and hold.

4. A pop-up box will appear.

5. Tap the Close all tabs option and all of the tabs will close at once.

I'm always ready for a good deal on ebooks but don't always have the time to search for them.  I had this in mind when I bumped into BookBub.  BookBub is an alert service that keeps you up-to-date on book deals for Kindles, Nooks, and many other mobile reading devices.

 

I found the sign-up form on BookBub's Facebook Page.    Simply fill out the provided form and click the submit button.

 

 

Within 24 hours, you will begin receiving daily emails (1 per day) for free and/or deeply discounted books for your reading device. 

NOTE: Found an item but don't want to permanently download it to your device?  Check the SCDL online catalog for an ebook from the Ohio eBook Project.

When you receive an email, the offer will clearly state Free or a deeply discounted price.

 

Click on the Get Deal button.  You will be taken to the online book store you requested on your BookBub sign-up form. 

Follow the prompts to receive your free or deeply discounted ebook.  The following preview is for a Kindle eBook.  Other eBook stores may have different types of prompts.

 

NOTE:  Your devices or app must be compatible with the requested item. Your device or app must be registered with the online book store you requested on your BookBub sign-up form.

Getting Adobe Digital Editions

Adobe Digital Editions is free eBook reading software made by Adobe Systems (same folks that bring you Flash).  Digital Editions allows you to read and manage eBooks, and it is required to check out free public library eBooks in PDF or ePUB formats. Many public library books available through Overdrive are in either the ePUB or PDF formats.  These can be read on Nooks, Kobos, Sony Readers, and many other non-Kindle eReaders.

This post will take you through the steps necessary to get Digital Editions on your own computer, so you can get free library eBooks!  You will only need to go through this process once.

To get Digital Editions, you must have an Adobe ID and the latest version of Flash (another free download). 
If you don't have an Adobe account, you can create one (for free) here .  It is a good idea to use the same e-mail address for your Adobe ID that you will be using to check out library books.

Please note that this install was done on a computer using Windows XP.  If you have a different operating system, the screen make look a little different, though the process will be the same.

1) An easy way to get started with Digital Editions is to first go to the Ohio eBook Project website at ohioebooks.com.   This is the site you will use to find and check out books.  On the right side of the page, there is a panel called "Getting Started".  Click on the link that says Adobe Digital Editions.

2) You will be taken to this page, where you need to click on Download Adobe Digital Editions:

3) This will take you to the Adobe website.About halfway down the page, there is a box that says Adobe Digital Editions Installer.  You need to click on the brown button that says Install

4) The button will transform into two buttons, Install or Cancel.  If you wish to proceed with the download, you must click Install

5) A dialog box will appear asking which components you wish to install.  Two are required, the shortcuts are not.  They make it easier to access Digital Editions once it is installed.

6)The next dialog box informs you where on your computer the download will be installed.  You can choose a different location if you like, or just click the Install button.

7)When your installation is finished, you will see this message.  Click close to launch Digital Editions.

8) Digital Editions will launch and you will be guided through the set-up assistant.  Click continue here.

9)You will need to authorize your computer using your Adobe ID.  Enter your e-mail address and your Adobe password.

10) On the next screen, click Finish to activate Digital Editions

11) You have now installed Adobe Digital Editions!  You will use it to read eBooks and transfer free public library eBooks from your computer to your eReader device.

The Book Depository

The Book Depository is a British bookseller whose motto is “All Books To All” and “selling less of more rather than more of less.”  This includes offering over 11,000 free e-books, many from their own imprint, Dodo Press.  At this time, the free ebooks are only available as PDFs, which can be read using Adobe Reader, a free software.  (To download Adobe Reader, go to: http://get.adobe.com/reader.)  Most e-readers, including the Amazon Kindle and Barnes and Noble Nook, can read PDF e-books.

Home Page

To get free e-books available from The Book Depository, go to: http://www.bookdepository.com/free.  The home page offers information about The Book Depository’s free e-books.  Click on Search free eBooks to start looking for e-books.

Search

Enter a title, author, or other keyword in the Add keywords box and click Refire Search.

Search Results

All of the e-books matching the search will be displayed.  Click on the title to find out more about the book or click Get Free eBook to be taken to the book’s record.

Record

The record includes information about the book, as well as a link to purchase the book or download the free PDF.  To get the e-book, click on Download free eBook PDF.

Downloading
A popup box will appear.  If you chose to Save, be sure to give the PDF a name and note where it is being saved.  Alternatively, choose to Open and start reading.

OR

Transferring to an E-Reader

Plug the e-reader into the computer using the USB cable.  Locate the file on the computer.  Go to Computer and where the e-reader should be listed as a device.  Left click, hold, and drag the e-book  to the e-reader.

For most e-readers, this is the final step.  If using a Kindle, double click Kindle to open.  Left click, hold, and drag the e-book into the documents folder.
