Upgrading to Adobe Digital Editions 2.0

For readers who have been enjoying the library’s Adobe EPUB e-books on their computers and e-readers such as the Nook, Kobo, and Sony Reader, Adobe has updated their Digital Editions software, and it may cause a problem the first time an e-book from the Ohio eBook Project is downloaded to the computer.  These easy steps need to be followed only the first time an OEP title is downloaded to the computer with the updated software.

1. Find the desired e-book and follow the standard check out procedures.  Click on Download.

 

2. A pop-up box will appear.  Select Save as and note where the e-book is being saved.  (The Desktop is usually an easy place to find the file again.)

3. Right click on the book and then left click on Open.

4. A pop-up box will then ask how to open the  file.  Click the button next to Select a program from a list of installed programs and then click OK. 

5. Select Adobe Digital Editions 2.0.  Mark the check box next to Always use the selected program to open this kind of file. This box must be selected to avoiding opening files by this process every time. Click OK.

6. If ADE is not on the initial list, click Browse.  It may take some searching to find the program.  Searching all installed programs from the Start Menu can help find where it’s located. Click on Digital Editions and then click Open.

And just remember, this only needs to be done the first time you use the upgraded Adobe software.  The next time you download an e-book from the Ohio eBook Project, it will open automatically in ADE.

If you own a Kindle, you’ve likely already heard that three publishers have settled with the Department of Justice concerning an anti-trust suit alleging that publishers colluded to fix the price of ebooks.  Amazon has sent emails to Kindle owners alerting them that soon they should receive store credit that can be used to buy either ebooks or other merchandize from Amazon.  (Kindle owners can also request a check.)  These credits apply to ebooks purchased from the three publishers who have settled—Hachette, Harper Collins, and Simon & Schuster—that were purchased between April 2010 and May 2012.  Publishers Penguin and Macmillan, as well as Apple, are still fighting the charges.  No court date has yet been set, but it appears as though the case may not make it to court until next year.  Also, there is no word yet on how the announced merger between Penguin and Random House (the only major publisher not charged by the Department of Justice for price fixing) may affect Penguin’s role in the suit and ebook retailing in general.

Better Homes and Gardens: Read it and Eat

In the November issue of Better Homes and Gardens there was a great article and book suggestions on Read it and eat.  With many books going the digital route, including cookbooks, you are able to have a recipe right in front of you while preparing the food.  The difference is you don't need to worry about damage to the book, lost items, or returning it after a hectic holiday.
I found myself a few nights ago, following a recipe directly from my iPad.  The iPad remained propped up on the counter top away from the activity for quick and easy access.  In today's post, I've included B & G's list of cookbook recommendations along with a few of my own.  If you have a favorite of your own, just place the title in the comment box along with the author for a faster item search.

OverDrive App Comes to NOOK

OverDrive has announced a NOOK App for wireless downloading of digital material.

"Borrowing eBooks and audiobooks from the library just got a whole lot easier for users of the NOOK HD, NOOK HD+, NOOK Tablet™ and NOOK Color™. Last week, Barnes & Noble added the OverDrive Media Console app to the NOOK Apps™ storefront. This NOOK app enables users to wirelessly borrow eBooks and MP3 audiobooks from the library.

All NOOK devices, including NOOK 1st Edition, NOOK Simple Touch and NOOK Simple Touch with GlowLight, have always enabled users to read eBooks borrowed from libraries and scho  ols, but the process required sideloading the files from a computer using Adobe Digital Editions and a USB cable. Now users of NOOK HD, NOOK HD+, NOOK Tablet and NOOK Color can borrow eBooks and audiobooks wirelessly using the OverDrive app.

Users can visit the NOOK Apps storefront to install the free OverDrive Media Console (OMC) app. The app enables users to locate a library or school nearby, browse or search their eBook and MP3 audiobook collection and, after entering a valid library card or school ID,  check out and download the title for a lending period of one to three weeks (depending on the library or school's policies). At the end of the lending period, the title simply expires.

 The version of OMC available in the NOOK Apps storefront is OMC for Android v2.5, so any instructions found on library Help pages related to OMC for Android will apply to the NOOK app. While the app is free, users will need a valid NOOK account in order to download the app."

Deleting Multiple Tabs on a Kindle Fire

Hi Everyone,
A question asked today involved deleting multiple tabs on a Kindle Fire.  Many times we open multiple tabs as we are browsing the Internet.  You can close them one at a time by tapping on the X found on the tab.  But if you open more than a few you may want to close them all at once.

To close all tabs at once:
1. If not already opened, open the web browser on your Kindle Fire.
2. If not already opened, tap on the window that has the multiple tabs.
3. On the far left-hand side of the Tab bar, tap and hold.

4. A pop-up box will appear.

5. Tap the Close all tabs option and all of the tabs will close at once.
