We needed something to be able to give to the patrons to take home after showing them here in the library how to find the library's databases. I created this to hand out if it was needed. I hope you find it useful.

Technology Gift How-to Instructions for Library Digital Materials

Hello Everyone,
It's that time of year again when people are making decisions about what to buy their special someone, family member, or friend.  For those of you who decide on a technology device such as ereader, tablet, notebook, computer, or smart phone I have a little recommendation for you. Try adding  just a little more to the package: How-to Instructions on Downloading Library Materials.

The devices listed above can be used to read ebooks, listen to audio books or music, even read digital magazines or watch a streaming video.  Not sure how it is done?  Well, turn to your local library for assistance.  Many libraries such as the Stark County District Library have created handouts, provide training classes, or individual assistance for those needing help with downloading digital materials found in their collection.
The SCDL Digital Collections includes:
The Ohio Digital Library--ebooks, audio books, music, and videos
Hoopla--Audio books, music, videos, and TV programs
Zinio--Digital magazines collection

Want to make it a little more personal, ask if the instructions can be printed from home.  If you have a printer you can use special paper to print the instructions.  I know my sister loves butterflies.  I printed her instructions on stationary with butterflies.  Want to be a little more creative?  Try a word processing software such as Microsoft Word, Google Docs, or Pages to copy and paste the instructions into and then add borders and/or clip art.  Even if you don't have a printer at home, libraries such as the SCDL provide computers and printing in color.  Note:  There is a small fee for printing in black and white or color.  Contact your local library for find out pricing.

By including How-to Instructions on Downloading Library Materials in your gift this year, you have opened up a whole new world of adventure, romance, mystery and more.
Happy Reading!

Ohio eBooks Project becomes Ohio Digital Library

Hello Everyone!
Starting tomorrow, November 7th, the Ohio Ebook Project and SEO Digital Consortium will merge to create a new consortium called the Ohio Digital Library. The new site will retain the look of the Ohio Ebook Project and for the most part retain all of the functionality of the previous site. With the merge there will be two big changes, the new site will default to 21 days for ebooks! & downloadable audiobooks and Disney Interactive ebooks will now be available! Below are some additional FAQ’s. If you have any additional questions please email me and I will get an answer for you.

Ohio Digital Library Frequently Asked Questions

What changes will existing users who currently use both sites see?
Patrons will now only have one site that looks and functions much like the other sites did. The name of the site will be The Ohio Digital Library. This site will have all of the holdings of the previous two catalogs.

What policies will the new catalog have in terms of checkout length, total checkouts, etc?
21 day checkouts default with options for 14 days and 7 days for all materials
12 holds
10 items checked out

Will individual patrons’ current checkouts and holds lists merge?
Yes, the current checkouts and holds patrons of both the Ohio eBook Project and the SEO Digital Catalog should appear on the Ohio Digital Library. Users will not lose any holds/checkouts because of combining accounts, but if it causes them to reach/exceed their max, then they wouldn’t be able to place any new holds/checkouts until some have been removed.

How will the merged holds be ranked?
Patrons will still retain the holds that they placed on the Ohio eBook Project and the SEO Digital Catalog. These holds will retain their original timestamp and will be sorted by that timestamp. So, the number on the holds list may change for your patron, but they have not lost their place in line, if that makes sense.

How will this change effect users of the Overdrive app?
Users who have the Ohio eBook Project site bookmarked/saved in their app will see “Ohio Digital Library” and won’t need to make any changes. Those patrons who had SEO saved but not OEP will need to find the new site under its new name. Or, if they go to their SEO bookmark, it will redirect them.

Will there be a new URL or link for the merged site?
Yes, the URL for the site will be http://ohdbks.lib.overdrive.com/ but the URLs Ohioebooks.com, ohioebooks.org, Ohioebook.com and Ohioebook.org will also work. All links from the old sites will redirect to this URL.

How many items will be in this new site?
This new catalog will have approximately 125,000 copies of items for our patrons to check out. It’s harder to determine titles at this time, since there is a lot of overlap between the two collections.

Troubleshooting OverDrive's mobile app on an iOS device (iPhone/iPad/iPod touch)

Please try these steps in order. Once your issue is resolved, you can stop—there's no need to continue on to the next step.
Step 1:
  1. Make sure OverDrive's mobile app is closed along with any other unnecessary apps.
  2.  Double-click the Home button to open your 'recents list.'
  3.  Swipe up on the OverDrive app to close it. Or, if you're not using iOS 7, tap and hold the OverDrive icon until it begins to shake. Tap the red X to close it.
  4. Close any other unneeded apps.
  5.  Press the Home button to exit your 'recents list'.
  6. Open OverDrive's mobile app and check the 'Bookshelf'. If titles are missing, try downloading them again.
  7. Continue to Step 2 if the app is still misbehaving.
Step 2:
  1. Restart your device.
  2. Hold down the Power button until the red 'slide to power off' slider appears.
  3. Power your device off.
  4. Hold down the Power button until your screen lights up.
  5. Open OverDrive's mobile app and check the 'Bookshelf'. If titles are missing, try downloading them again.
  6. Continue to Step 3 if the app is still misbehaving.
Step 3:
  1. Reauthorize your device.
  2. Tap Settings from the Home menu. If you're using an older version of our app, you'll find settings under Get Books+.

Apple iOS 7 and OverDrive Media Console

Apple released iOS on September 18th and many of your Apple users may have upgraded their device(s).

When an existing OverDrive Media Console (OMC) user upgrades to iOS 7, the app will fail when trying to open a DRM-protected eBook. New or first time users of OMC are unaffected by this issue.

We are resolving the issue but in the meantime, here are immediate remedies for users:

1) Re-authenticate the app with their existing or a new Adobe ID. Refer to the iOS section of this Help article for assistance. (Recommended)
2) Uninstall and re-install OMC which will also require the user to re-authorize with Adobe. IMPORTANT NOTE: A re-install will clear a user's bookshelf, history, and app settings.

Audiobook users won't notice that anything is different unless they attempt to download parts of audiobooks they already downloaded to OMC before upgrading to iOS 7. A user will receive an error message informing them to download the title again.

Thank you,
Dee

Want to impress your teachers this year?

Of course you do!  And to help you prepare, the library is here to arm your back-to-school readiness with an awesome database called Academic Search Premier.  This database helps you find highly credible sources of information for your research papers and presentations.  With a few basic steps, you can find the print sources you need (digitally formatted articles from newspapers, magazines, and scholarly journals) to support your research topics whilst creating sturdy works cited pages.

Here’s how:

You can access Academic Search Premier from any computer with an internet connection. To do this, log on to www.starklibrary.org.  Once you are on the library’s home page, hover your mouse over the green RESEARCH tab and from the drop-down, click on DATABASES A-Z.

An alphabetized list of databases will appear.  Scroll down just a little and click on the link to Academic Search Premier.

(NOTE: If you are accessing this database from an off-site computer, you will need to log in with your Stark County District library card number and pin number.  Contact a library associate if you need assistance with your pin number.)

There are a number of ways you can search for articles with this database.  For the best results, utilize the database’s limiters (special tools you can use to specify your search) found in Search Options.

With these “limiting” options, you can:

·         Search Full Text copies. (These results will provide full versions of the articles.)
·         Limit to Scholarly/Peer Reviewed sources. (Use this if required by your instructor.)
·         Refine year of publication. (Current information is best for most research.)
·         Search for phrases in quotes (ex. “body image”) to find exact word combinations.

Specify your results further by clicking the Advanced Search link under the search bar.

With Advanced searching, you can specify where you want your search terms and phrases to be found (ie. Title, Abstract, Author, etc.).  The example below shows a search that will result in articles written specifically by that author.

You can also use a tool called Boolean operators (AND, OR, and NOT) which are great for refining your results.  These are used to connect words together and tell the database to return results that contain some or all of those words.

·         AND – returns articles that contain all of your terms, such as body image AND teenagers.  AND will narrow your search, returning fewer results.

·         OR – will return articles that contain either of your terms, such as teenagers OR adolescents.  OR will broaden your search, returning more results.  (OR is excellent for synonyms.)

·         NOT excludes articles that contain a certain term, like body image NOT women.  That would get you results that focused on men and body image issues.  NOT will narrow your search, returning fewer results.

Want to learn even more about the Academic Search Premier database?  Register for the Effective Research Techniques program happening at Perry Sippo branch library on August 12th (for high school students) and August 13th (for college students).

Read in your browser

Have you ever wanted to read a library ebook without having to download any software or an app?  As long as you have an internet connection, you can read ebooks in your browser.  And don’t worry about losing your place—your place will be saved for the next time you log into your Ohio eBook Project account.

Start by checking out an ebook as usual.  When taken to the Bookshelf page, rather than selecting Download so that the book can be read in an OverDrive Media Console or Kindle app, or opened with Adobe Digital Editions to be transferred to another device, click on Read (In your browser).

The book will now open in a new tab.  Unless otherwise selected, the book always opens with a tutorial on how to read the book in the browser.  The most important direction is knowing that clicking the right side of the book moves the screen to the next page.

Down the right side of the screen are options for navigating through the book, including the Table of Contents, Bookmarks, and Search.  There are also options for changing the appearance of the book, including Font size.

And don’t worry about remembering where you left off.  When you’re ready to read more of your book, you simply log back into the Ohio eBook Project and click on your Account near the top right of the screen.  This takes you to your Bookshelf, where your book will be waiting.  When you click on Read (In your browser), the book will open where you left off, even if you’re using a different computer.
